Where are the best burgers in Lyon?

If you love hamburgers, don’t worry, there are tons of burger restaurants in Lyon. But making a choice is not always easy. Don’t panic, we’re here to help you! Thanks to this small top 5, you will have several tracks to guide you and make you hungry…

#1 Big Fernand

Here, everything is homemade, from French fries to sauces, and if it’s not, you can be sure that the products are of French origin (bread, meat…). They offer a variety of burgers, and if that’s not enough, you can also make your own burger. You can choose your accompaniment and your drink, or opt for a formula. If you’re vegetarian, you can still eat at Big Fernand’s because they cook vegetarian burgers. The decoration is nice, it’s easy to go to the restaurant because it’s located in the Peninsula and it is very popular! Also, as it is a chain of restaurants, you can find Big Fernand in Paris, Lille, and Nantes.

36 Rue Ferrandière, 69002 Lyon

#2 Les Tontons Burgers

Located in the 5th district of Lyon, a few steps from the Church of Saint Georges, this restaurant knows how to sell its burgers and bagels! The restaurant is inspired by the famous French film Les tontons flingueurs. Its decoration will make you dream: old cameras, films and other stage objects are hidden in this restaurant. With their sought-after recipes at low prices, they began to make a very good reputation in Lyon, and one can blame, among other things, the kindness of the staff for this success.

#3 King Marcel

As King Marcel is a chain, you can find this restaurant in Lyon but also in Paris. As its name suggests, you can guess that it is a very French restaurant, which prepares burgers with French ingredients like Saint-Nectaire or mushrooms, and their meat comes exclusively from France… They also plant a small French flag in the bread of their burgers. They also offer reduced prices for students and if you live in Lyon, you can even have your burger delivered.

26 Boulevard Jules Favre, 69006 Lyon and 31 Rue Mercière, 69002 Lyon

#4 Guys and sons

Guys and Sons is particularly known for its more than original recipes. They offer a very wide choice of burgers from classic cheeseburger to burgers cooked with duck and foie gras, and they also prepare vegetarian burgers. They have their own homemade fries and sauces, and they also deliver their food (and let you know if they’re late!). They are also present in Montpellier and Clermont-Ferrand.

89 Cours Vitton, 69006 Lyon ET 14 Rue Tupin, 69002 Lyon

#5 Yabio

Yabio, with its deer head logo, is a burger restaurant specializing in organic food. They offer menus at reasonable prices and you can taste a vegetarian burger with a tofu steak. They make their own iced tea, and most of their products are French. The staff is nice and the restaurant is located in a nice corner of the 1st district.ers-Facebook.

English words impossible to pronounce for French speakers!

If you are struggling with the French language, don’t worry: French people have a hard time with English too. You have probably noticed that some sounds do not exist in French and that is (among other things) the reason why we can’t seem to pronounce these words properly. To avoid misunderstandings, we have listed the 10 words to avoid when you have conversations in English with your French roommates!

Squirrel #1

We are just unable to pronounce this word! The final “L”, the English “r”… Too difficult for French people! You will probably hear the very French pronunciation of the word, /skwirɛl/, with the end of the word pronounced like “belle”.

Beach/Bitch #2

In French, we don’t make any difference between the long “i” and the short “i” that is why we usually pronounce these two words the same way which can end in embarrassing situations.

Particularly #3

So many “l” and “r”! Moreover, with long words (yes, five syllables make a long word!), French peoplenever know where to accentuate.

Throughout, Through, Although… #4

Every word with these four little letters “ough” is a torture for every French speaker. We never know how to pronounce them, especially when you know that the sound changes according to the word it’s in!

Hierarchy #5

The “ch” sound can be tricky as it changes according to the word it’s in, both in English and in French. In French, it is more frequently pronounced / ʃ / like in the pronoun “she”, this is why it can be confusing. Hierarchy combines a triphthong and the “ch” sound. This one is really hard, check the Cambridge dictionary if you want to be sure for both US and EN pronounciation!

Anesthetize #6

Luckily for us, this word is not that common and we don’t have to use it every day (except if you’re a doctor in an English-speaking country…). The “th” sound followed by a “t” sound are very difficult to pronounce, especially when you know that the two “th” pronunciation, / θ / and / ð /, do not exist in French!

Angry/hungry #7

We have very few aspirated H in French, this is why words beginning with an “h” are difficult for us. The difference between angry and hungry is not easy to make for a French speaker, so it can lead to funny misunderstandings.

Focus #8

This is a very common mistake in French which results either in laughter or embarrassment according to the situation. Diphthongs in English are very hard to master for French people and they usually forget about it. With this word, the pronunciation usually look like “F**k us” in French.

Sheet/shit #9

Same as before: once again, this slight difference is difficult to make for a French speaker and that can lead to massive misunderstanding…

Maneuver #10

In French, we don’t make any difference between the long “i” and the short “i” that is why we usually pronounce these two words the same way which can end in embarrassing situations.

Student associations in French Universities

If you are going to study in a French university, you will soon discover the joys of students’ parties! But these events need to be organized, so universities need student associations and BDE to take care of the associative activities.

Here you will find a few information about student associations in French universities !

What’s a BDE?

A BDE, in French, is the Bureau Des Etudiants. It is a students’ association which is elected every year by other students and that takes care of organizing different activities, such as parties, integration events, cultural or sports events…  They can represent an entire school or only a pathway (usually the most popular and frequented of the university).

BDE often receive financial help from the Fédération Française Des Bureaux Etudiants, but they also have to launch campaigns and/or events themselves to collect some money. If you are studying in a French university, it is impossible to miss the BDE as they have posters everywhere and organize distributions of flyers frequently.

What are student associations?

Contrary to a BDE, a student association can be oriented towards sports, artspolitics… They are non-profit organizations and they are engaged into the protection of students’ rights and interests. According to their specification, they can organize different types of events, such as sports activities, creation of a radio or a webzine, environment related events… You can join an association without difficulties if you want to, or you can even create your own (by following some legal rules of course)!

If you are passionate about a particular topic, or if you just want to enjoy your exchange with other students, try to find an association that suits you in your university!

Find a renovated, furnished and equipped flatshare in the center of the biggest French student cities easily with Chez Nestor! Visit our website to find your ideal accommodation and rent it in a few clics.

Lyon: A cyclist’s paradise!

Today we talk about Lyon. Most of the people in Lyon use their bikes to reach every corner of the city. You don’t have one?! Before rushing to the Bon Coin website and buy one, let us explain why Lyon is the cyclist’s paradise! It is difficult to criticize the public transport in Lyon, because the city is well connected with metro, bus and tram services. However, the best way to traverse the French gastronomic capital is by bike, which happens to be the quickest way of getting from A to B!

The advantages of cycling in Lyon

As the third biggest city in France, Lyon may seem daunting to those who have not yet arrived.  However, with a population of approximately 1 million, it is much smaller than the capital and almost completely flat, therefore it is possible to cycle from one side to the other within 20 minutes!

The bicycle sharing system named Cyclocity was created by JCDecaux, who chose Lyon as the starting point for their concept, a city that is always one step ahead! The scheme was adopted by Grand Lyon under the name of ‘Velo’v,’ which derives from the French for ‘bike’ and the English for ‘love.’ Nice, isn’t it? Due to its success, it was quickly launched in other major French cities. Nowadays, you can see those bikes everywhere in the city, at any time. And not only in Lyon, but also in Paris and other big French cities 🙂

In Lyon you will find so many bicycle paths that it would take you a while to follow them all! This is very good when you’re afraid of biking directly in the streets. Vast bicycle paths can also be found along the banks of the Rhone and the Saone rivers. So don’t miss the chance to go there when the weather is sunny!

Cycling in Lyon : How it works ?

Since each Velo’v station is located approximately 300m from the next, cycling in Lyon is becoming increasingly practical, enabling you to explore the city whilst saving money and exercising, which is necessary after several ‘Bouchon’ meals!  However, during seasons of higher demand, it can be difficult to find stations with bikes, or alternatively many are completely full when you have to return your bicycle.  Try downloading apps which will inform you of the status of stations near you. TCL, Univélo Lyon, and AllBikesNow are recommended.

If the Velo’v system appeals to you, you can try and subscribe to the service monthly. This would only take few minutes of your time and it is very affordable – a real life-changing decision!

For those who have their own bike in Lyon, why not check out the quirky cafe which is appropriately named La Bicycletterie? Get your bicycle repaired whilst you relax with a cappuccino and a piece of cake! The concept is simply and effective! You’ll find there other bikes enthusiasts!  Also, second hand bikes can be bought from Ciclofficina which also serves as a bicycle reparation workshop. And from Le Bon Coin as well. But be aware of the scams! And enjoy Lyon by bike!
