Festival of Lights

You may have heard the nickname of Lyon, “Ville des Lumières”, which actually comes from the Festival of Lights and partially from the Lumière brothers – but this is another story… Every year, at the beginning of December, the city organizes what we called in French “La Fête des Lumières” which is more impressive year after year. Every year more and more tourists come to Lyon during this festival to enjoy the incredible lightning installations and the activities you can find hidden in the heart of the city. Are you planning to come to Lyon for the festival? Here you can find more details about it this rooted tradition.

The origins of the Lights Festival in Lyon

The origins of this tradition are still open for debate today but people generally agree to say that they are paying tribute to the Virgin Mary.

There are different legends: one saying that Mary saves Lyonfrom the plague epidemic during the Renaissance, another saying that Prussian people were invading France and were trying to take over Lyon and once again, Mary saves the city…

As people were frequently lighting candles for the intercession of Mary (to save a child from disease, a soldier from the war etc.), the city decided in 1852 to honour her properly and to put in a bronze statue of the Virgin, but the weather did not agree. They were unable to install it because of the rain, and finally, on December 8, the sun decided to come out: the statue was inaugurated during the evening and every inhabitant put a candle on their window that burnt until morning.

Ever since, people from Lyon and its surrounding has respected the tradition and lit candles, called “Lumignons” every December 8. The candles are today part of the show and provided directly by the city of Lyon. Take a stroll in the Vieux Lyon and you’ll be amazed about how many candles peek from each window.

The Lights Festival nowadays

Today, this is not the candles on windows that are renowned internationally but the Festival of Lights. Since 1989, the city organized the “fête des Lumières” which consists in setting sound and visual animations on the most beautiful buildings of Lyon, such as l’Hôtel de Ville, the Cathédrale Saint-Jean or the Opera. Each historical monument is worth an incredible installation. They also put a luminous sign in front of the Basilique of Fourvière saying “Merci Marie”. The animations gain more quality and draw in more and more visitors every year: in 2017, there were around 2.5 millions of people to admire the lights of Lyon. Find here more details about last year’s event. The city is already trying to find expositions and themes for their 2018 edition!

If you are in Lyon during the Festival of Lights, be ready to face a lot of people and queue for the metro! If you want to come in the city around December 8, try to plan your trip in advance because, as the event is internationally famous, the tickets and hotel rooms are usually more expensive during this period.

You’ll find more information on the Lyon Festival of Lights website.

Discover Lyon's specialties

Lyon has many traditional dishes and is considered the world’s capital of gastronomy. You should know that in Lyon, a traditional restaurant where you can eat specialities is called a “Bouchon“. You can find many of these eateries in the Vieux Lyon and in the small streets of the Presqu’ile! So what are you waiting for? Discover the Lyon’s specialities with this article 🙂

What can you eat in a Bouchon?

  • Appetizers:

If you want to start your meal with a drink, you can order a Kir. You will have a glass of white wine with liquor (blackcurrant, raspberry, blackberries…) If you want to eat something with your drink, you can order some Grattons (= pork rinds), which are made of pork meat grilled in their grease.

  • Starters:

La Cochonaille Lyonnaise is made of pork specialities. The dish is usually made with hot bacon, rosette de Lyon, potted meat, hot sausage or sausage in brioche. If you’d rather have a dish a little healthier, you can eat a Salade Lyonnaise made with a green salad with croutons, poached egg and grilled bacon. For the brave, there is a speciality called the Tablier de sapeur. This is ox tripe marinated in white wine.

  • Main courses:

Most of Lyonnais dishes are cooked with meat. You can choose between capon or Bresse chicken with mushroom sauce (often truffles or morels), pork which is the basis of many typical dishes, such as black pudding with apples, “petit salé aux lentilles” (knuckle of pork with lentils), hot “saucisson” and andouillette (chopped cooked pork). If you prefer to eat fish, you can taste the Quenelle de Brochet (= pike) sauce Nantua

  • Cheeses:

As you know, France is internationally famous for its cheeses and Lyon is no exception when it comes to that. You can taste the Saint Marcellin, the Tomme du Beaujolais, and the very special cheese of Lyon, the Cervelle de Canuts which is a cottage cheese with garlic, shallots and chives. Don’t be influenced by the name (Cervelle means brain), this is a very good and totally not disgusting Fromage Blanc. Which one would you like to taste first?

  • Desserts:

In Lyon, people are quite fond of sugary food so you will have a various choice of desserts. You can taste the Pogne, a brioche cooked with orange blossom extract, the Praline pie or Bugnes, called Angel Wings in English. This pie is known for its very sweet taste given by the Praline (almonds and sugar!).

  • Lyon’s wines:

France is renowned for its wine, and Lyon has its specialities in this domain too. If you like red wine, you can choose between  Beaujolais,  Côte Rôtie, Crozes-Hermitage,  Saint-Joseph or  Cornas and if you prefer white wine, you can taste a Condrieu. Each one is worth it!

Here you can admire a wide variety of different plants, each marked on the ground by a plate. Who knows, maybe you will spot your next apartment from up there!

Located at the foot of the Fourvière hill, Vieux Lyon is the oldest part of the city. Take a stroll in its streets to breathe some of the Renaissance-style. The area is characterised by the presence of plenty of majestic homes, built by great Italian families who decided to come here during the Renaissance period.
The must-see destinations here are the ‘traboules’ – the unusual covered passages to go from one building to another – the historical homes, the internal medieval courtyards and the Saint-Jean Cathedral.
You can also stop for a drink in one of the pubs in the area or eat something typical in one of the many restaurants.

#3 Enjoy the sun in the parc de la Tête d’Or

Parc de la tete d'or
This is the biggest green park in Lyon, a sort of Central Park in Lyon! And to that point, this park was inaugurated on the same day as the famous park in New York 😊 Here, you will find a broad open-air zoo – free entry! – a lake, and a wonderful botanic garden composed of glass and iron greenhouses, dating back to the 19th century! The lake covers a surface of more than 16 hectares. You will find a good rest on its banks.
The park is very busy during summertime and on the week-ends. Strollers, runners, skaters, families and youth all gather here in a nice melting-pot. The park is wooded, so don’t worry. You will find the best spot under the tall trees during the hottest days!

#4 Eat in a typical Bouchon Lyonnais

In the life of Lyon, the bouchons are the typical restaurants where you will find delicious local specialties and excellent wines like the Beaujolais or the Côtes-du-Rhône. The atmosphere in one of these bouchons is simple and convivial. People come here to relax and eat in a good mood, enjoying regional and authentic products.
Come here like you’ll do visiting an old friend. Good vibes are assured! It is in the Vieux Lyon neighbourhood that you’ll find the best addresses to eat and drink 😊

5 original restaurants in Lyon

If you live in Lyon, you have probably noticed that restaurants are everywhere, and it can be difficult to make a choice sometimes. Here are a list of the most typical and best eateries to help you:

#1 The Kitchen Café

The Kitchen Café is at the same time a restaurant and a tea room, so you can go there for lunch (the establishment is not open for dinner) or for a snack. It opens quite recently, in 2014, but it has already dig in the gastronomic landscape of Lyon. The cook is from Sweden but she masters perfectly the French cuisine. She offers traditional courses brought up to date for a very reasonable price (menus are between €25 and €35). Don’t forget to book a table because the restaurant is a victim of its popularity!

#2 Mademoiselle Rêve

A dreamlike name for a dreamlike place! Mademoiselle Rêve is a restaurant and a wine bar. For lunch, the eatery offers menus and dishes of the day, and at night, you can savor excellent wines with massive assortments of cheese and charcuterie. If you want to discover French specialties, this is the perfect place for you! The waitresses are obliging and nice, helping you with your choice if you are not a wine expert. What is remarkable about this place is that the prices are more than reasonable: you can pay €3,50 for a glass of wine, and the assortments for several people are around 16€.

#3 Le Musée

If you want to discover the gastronomic specialties of Lyon, you are in the right place! Le Musée is a typical “Bouchon Lyonnais” and offers many dishes that have made Lyon famous for its food, such as “Saucisson Brioché”, Pike Quenelle sauce Nantua, and Praline Pie to name but a few. The decoration is old school and representative of the Bouchons’ style with its checkered tablecloths and wooden bar. The owner, a former baker, gives you many information about Lyon’s culinary and cultural history. The menus are between €20 and €30 according to the set menu you choose (with or without cheese for example).

#4 Deux filles en cuisine

Deux filles en cuisine is a very convivial French restaurant in the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse. The two chefs cook in front of the clients a unique menu that changes every day ! They offer a lemonade to every client who are sharing the two big tables of the restaurant. Their dishes are made with fresh products and they make people rediscover typical French recipes for only €15. You can also book the entire restaurant if you don’t like the idea of sharing your table.

5# La Mère Brazier

La mere brazier Restaurant
This restaurant is not for small budgets – you will not find anything under €60 – so get your wallet ready! La Mère Brazier  is a two-Michelin stars restaurant named after Eugénie Brazier, a famous chef from Lyon and boss of the “Mères Lyonnaises”. Her Bouchon is quite historical as it was created in 1921, and its success hasn’t stopped growing ever since. You can taste refined dishes that are respecting the gastronomic traditions of Lyon, as well as delicious wines. The new chef Mathieu Viannay respects the place and we can see it in his courses. The establishment has been featured into two French cooking shows!

You have enough to make a tour of the flavours of the world with your roommates 😉

Renting a flat without a French guarantor

Renting an accommodation in France without a French guarantor is possible. It’s actually really simple if you know where to look. It’s a shame that a lot of students think that finding a flatshare or an accommodation without a French guarantor is impossible, when, in fact, easy solutions exist ! Keep reading 🙂

Sharing a flat/renting a flat in Lyon without a French guarantor is totally possible and here are 2 ways to do it.

#1 Renting or flatsharing without a French guarantor: “Caution Locative Etudiante”

If doing some paperwork doesn’t scare you and if you really need to rent a flat in Lyon without any French guarantor take a look at the: « Caution Locative Etudiante » (CLE).

It is a state aid handled by the CROUS : “centres régionaux des œuvres universitaires et scolaires” which in charge of social help for students, welcoming foreigner students, student accommodation…)

This guarantee was created for students looking for an accommodation and who do not have any guarantor. It is available everywhere in France.

Conditions

All accommodations are concerned as long as they are sanitary and safe to live in.

The process concerns students:

  • With revenues, but no guarantor.
  • Who are looking for an accommodation in France because of their studies.
  • Who are aged less than 28 years old when signing the lease.
  • Who are aged more than 28 years old if they are foreign doctorate students (doctorate degree obtained less than 6 years ago, or holding a fixed-term contract (without the degree) as researcher in a research unit or laboratory).

How does it work ?

In order to get the « Caution Locative Etudiante » (CLE), the student has to initially pay a subscription equal to 1.5% of the amount of the rent.

For instance, if the student has trouble paying the rent, it’s the CLE that will take care all the unpaid rents and charges. However the student will still have to reimburse the CLE and a repayment schedule will be negotiated for that matter.

Particular cases

#1- Change accommodation

If the student changes his accommodation, but still wants to keep benefiting from the guarantee, he has to honor his debts (refund all the unpaid rents and pay the contribution).

#2- Flatshare

There can only be one guarantee per lease. If every co-tenant wants to individually benefit from the financial support, the signed lease must not have a solidarity clause. In case of flatshare, every co-tenant has to make a request and match the allocation conditions.

#3- Procedure

You have to make the request from your personal space on the Lokaviz website. In order to access your personal space, you have to sign up or sign in on the portal MesServices. Then, you need to click on the icon « CLE » and fill in the CLE request form.
